The Rossini Lecture/Award
In recognition of the contributions of Prof. Frederick D. Rossini to the work of the IUPAC Commission on Thermodynamics and Thermochemistry during his 39-year membership (1934-1973), the Commission decided, in 1973, to institute a “Rossini Lecture”, to be given during the IUPAC International Conferences on Chemical Thermodynamics (ICCT), (now IACT/IUPAC ICCT). The first lecture was given by Prof. Rossini himself at the Fourth Conference held in August 1975 in Montpellier, France. Rossini lecturers were appointed by the Commission on Thermodynamics until 2002, and are now elected by the Board of Directors of the International Association of Chemical Thermodynamics (IACT). The text of these lectures is published in Pure and Applied Chemistry and, with IUPAC permission, in the Journal of Chemical Thermodynamics .
Process for Selection of the Rossini Awardee for ICCT
- Establish the Nominee Selection Committee (NSC)
- January 1 st prior to ICCT-11
- Composition of committee
- Chair of the NSC
- IACT Chairman to have most recently left the board
- If this person cannot serve, the past chair serves as NSC Chair
- If the past chair also cannot serve, duty falls to the IACT Chair
- The most recent 5 Rossini awardees
- All are asked to join the NSC by the IACT Secretary
- The NSC must have a minimum of 3 members (Chair + 2)
- If the minimum is not attained from the pool of past awardees, the needed seats are filled by the IACT Chair (if not already the NSC Chair), IACT Secretary, and IACT Treasurer, in that order.
- Duties of the NSC
- Solicit nominations with the aid of the IACT Secretary
- Members of the NSC can put forward nominations
- All nominations must be received before the closing deadline
- Report to IACT board
- List of nominees for voting by the IACT board
- The list will have a minimum of 2 and maximum of 3 names
- Nominations close May 1 st prior to ICCT-1

4 | SUPPORT OF QUALIFICATIONS (400 words) : State specific ways in which the nominee meets the requirements for the honor. The Support of Qualifications should be a narrative summary that supports the Statement of Qualifications. Frequently, publications or patents of the nominee provide important facts about the nominee’s achievements and may be brought into the argument in this section. |
| 2 | NOMINEE AND NOMINATOR (i.e., the PACKAGE AUTHOR): Give the full name, position held, mailing address, and current email address for the nominee and the nominator. |
5 | PUBLICATIONS and PATENTS : The number of journal articles, books, etc., can be given, but list bibliographic details of no more than 15 in approximate order of significance. Comments on specific publications can be given as part of Section 4 (above). |
| 3 | STATEMENT OF QUALIFICATIONS (50 words): Give a short summary of the nominee’s qualifications. Remarks : The Statement of Qualifications is the heart of the nomination. List the nominee’s achievements, which must be supported in the Support of Qualifications section that follows. |

Voting Procedures
- All members of the IACT board will be given (by email) the slate of candidates and nomination packages 4 weeks before the start of conference ICCT-1
- Votes must be provided to the IACT Secretary by 2 weeks before ICCT-1 (an exact deadline will be specified in the email)
- Voting details
- Each board member votes for 1 nominee or none
- Votes not received by the deadline will be considered abstentions, and late votes will not be considered.
- If a board member is nominated, that board member does not vote.
- The IACT Chairman will act as tie-breaker.
- Awardee Announcement
- The awardee will be announced by the IACT Chairman at the start of ICCT-1, and will subsequently be posted on the IACT website.
